Abstract
In this thesis, the author discusses the translation methods used to translate idioms in the novel Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata into Arabic by translator Sukainah Ibrahim. The research questions addressed in this thesis are: 1. What translation methods are employed by the translator to translate idioms from the source language into the target language? 2. Is there semantic equivalence in the translation of idioms from the source language to the target language? The aim of the study is to describe and determine: 1. The methods used in translating idioms from the source language into the target language. 2. The semantic equivalence present in the translation of idioms from the source language into the target language. The research method used in this study is qualitative descriptive library research. The techniques employed include reading, writing, studying, and analysing data through documentation. The study concludes that the translation methods used for translating idioms in the novel Laskar Pelangi into Arabic are as follows: translation of source language idioms into target language idioms (11 data analyses), translation of source language idioms into non-idioms in the target language (9 data analyses), untranslated source language idioms in the target language (10 data analyses), translation of non-idioms from the source language into idioms in the target language (11 data analyses), and 42 instances of semantic equivalence between idioms in the source language and their translations in the target language.
