Abstract

Islam, as a religion that brings mercy to all creation, regulates all aspects of life, including muamalah (social transactions). The advancement of time brings diverse models of transactions within society. One such emerging transaction is the purchase of digital games on the Steam platform. This paper will explore how the purchase of digital games on the Steam platform is viewed from the perspective of fiqh muamalah (Islamic jurisprudence on transactions). This research is significant given that the Steam platform has been operating since 2003, yet there has been no study examining the validity of its transactions from the perspective of Islamic law. This research employs normative literature methods with fiqh muamalah as the analytical tool. The results of this study indicate that the contract used in these transactions is ijarah (leasing), not a sale. This is because customers are only given access to play and enjoy the services available in the game, rather than owning the game outright. The transaction contract does not specify an end date for the contract. Thus, this transaction is legally flawed as it does not meet the conditions of the leasing contract (shigat) according to fiqh muamalah.
