Abstract

Zakat plays a central role in Islamic finance as a tool for promoting social justice, equitable wealth distribution, and poverty alleviation. In recent years, the rapid advancement of digital technologies has influenced various sectors, including zakat management, offering opportunities to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accessibility in the collection and distribution of zakat funds. This study aims to analyze the opportunities and challenges associated with the digital transformation of zakat management in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It seeks to understand how digital innovation can strengthen zakat governance while addressing the socio-technical and regulatory barriers that accompany this transformation. A qualitative research design was employed, combining semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and direct observation of local zakat institutions, policymakers, and technology partners. Data were thematically analyzed to identify emerging patterns in digital adoption, institutional readiness, and operational challenges. The findings reveal that while several zakat institutions in East Kalimantan have begun adopting digital tools such as e-payment systems, online platforms, and digital reporting, the implementation remains uneven across regions. Major opportunities lie in the use of financial technology (fintech) to improve efficiency and accountability. However, obstacles persist, including limited digital literacy among staff, inadequate infrastructure, and the absence of a comprehensive regulatory framework to govern digital zakat operations. The study concludes that digital transformation presents a promising avenue to modernize zakat management and improve governance outcomes. To realize its full potential, zakat institutions and policymakers must invest in capacity building, develop integrated digital platforms, and strengthen regulatory and Sharia-compliant oversight mechanisms.
